Sometimes the best possible contact material specification demands a collection of properties unavailable in a single material. For example, an application may require the low contact resistance of fine silver but the ability to resist weld to a substrate that demands a high resistance backing. Such a challenge can be resolved by cladding a contact material system that may include two or more materials, each offering a different critical property.
Material conductivity, mechanical strength, resistivity, and cost can all be engineered into the material system and then formed into a tape, often with a knurl or welding rail formed into a backing to facilitate resistance welding.
